About the Preparation Program*
Spalding University traces its roots to 1814 when the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth established Nazareth Academy. The earliest public ceremony was held in 1825 with Henry Clay presiding. Today, Spalding is an independent institution located between the main downtown business section of the city of Louisville and “Old Louisville,” a neighborhood of elegant Victorian mansions. The campus is conveniently located for students’ access to learning opportunities and resources. The Spalding University community embraces individuals from all traditions, encouraging them to live from a personal philosophy centered in a value system beyond self. The College of Education – one of four Centers of Excellence at the university – offers programs at the initial and advanced levels. At both levels the philosophy and theme of Educator as Leader frame the preparation of teachers and other professional personnel in undergraduate and graduate programs. Beginning in 2002-03, alternative licensure programs are offered at the MAT level. Advanced programs are also offered leading to additional licenses and rank change. Through our partnerships with local school districts, candidates may qualify for tuition remission and receive employment information.
